PENTA was established in 1991 as a collaboration between clinical centers for pediatric HIV population in Europe. Clinical trials are financed mainly by the European Commission (through the project EuroCoord), government bodies in some European countries, and with the support of the pharmaceutical industry.

PENTA Foundation for treatment and care of children with HIV serves as a umbrella for the clinical studies network of PENTA the clinical studies network of PENTA and also for the training activity and collaboration between cohorts.

Many questions related to HIV treatment are answered in clinical studies for adults and it is not necessary to repeat in clinical trials for children. However, the natural history of HIV with vertical transmission differs in important ways from the history of HIV for adults. Also, the tolerance to certain medications given to children may be different.

Since December 2002, Romania is part, through the Foundation of the RAA, of PENTA (European network of Paediatric AIDS treatment). PenPact1 (PENTA 9/PACTG 390) was the first PENTA study in our country, after Romanian Angel Appeal Foundation was designated to ensure management of PENTA studies in Romania.

EuroCoord(The European Coordinating Committee for the Integration of Ongoing Coordination Actions Related to Clinical and Epidemiological HIV Research) was created on 6 February 2006, with the aim of integrating projects between different partners and coordinate applications for funding through the EU Framework Programme seven.
